The customisation system is really quite deep and it’s easy to make passable abstrations of a massive range of characters and personalities. Anyhow, tou create your own Mii hero, and then start populating the world, including the townsfolk and party allies, using Miis that you either create, or grab from other players online. Miis, as in “the amusing little avatars from the Wii and 3DS era that Nintendo has since abandoned.” This release on Switch is odd if for no other reason that Miis aren’t really a thing anymore. Let’s see if I can explain this in a single paragraph without making your head spin: In Miitopia you go on a very traditional JRPG adventure (to defeat a Dark Lord, no less), using Miis. It’s just as well that the whole game is also a delight to play.
Miitopia is Nintendo at its most surreal. A friend or family member, should they walk into the room, are likely to say “what the hell is that?” and they’re not likely to be any less confused once you explain to them that it’s a turn-based JRPG about creating and collecting faces. The experience that you’re having with it is only ever going to make sense to you. It’s no 100-hour epic, but it’s a cute and quirky little RPG that makes for an adorable distraction when you need to let your brain rest for a bit.The best way to think of Miitopia is as a silly little playground, and that it’s a very personal playground.
Miitopia still retains its charm as it hops from 3DS to Switch, as well as a decent upgrade in the visual department. If you’ve been craving a silly, fun RPG that isn’t too difficult and offers a lot of variety, Miitopia is a must-buy. It’s basic as an RPG, but the execution of the basic combat system is good and it features modern quality-of-life improvements like auto-battle and fast-forward to keep the pacing high.
Having so much customization for the cast thanks to a robust online selection of fan creations allows the story to be goofier and funnier than it could be on its own, and the various absurd situations the cast is placed in help provide a lot of comedy. The jump up in graphics is welcome, but the biggest improvement to the experience as a whole lies in its Mii integration. Miitopia on Switch is a fantastic conversion from the 3DS and does an admirable job at enhancing the experience. If you’re looking for a serious RPG, it’s not here but, if you’re looking for a fun time filled with memes and light-hearted fun, you’re not going to do much better than Miitopia. This allows for randomly generated funny moments and a feeling of ownership not found in many other titles.
Try on glamorous wigs, go wild with colorful hairstyles, and unleash your creativity with battle-ready makeup!ĭespite the core gameplay being a remarkably basic RPG, Nintendo more than makes up for this by creating a world that makes fun of RPG tropes while giving you full ownership of every single character in the game. Spice up your Mii characters with a variety of fun customization features.
